Nothing Lasts forever

wheretonguemeetssoul:

We talked about a past I once knew
I said nothing lasts forever
She smiled and told me some things do

I said, no you misunderstood
For me, Nothing lasts forever
She asked, what about love?

I said no you misunderstood
For me, nothing is the only thing that lasts forever

Even if you don’t know any German, learn at least these words:
Bindung - bonds
Tiefe - depth
Abgrund - abyss
“Wir sind die Generation ohne Bindung und ohne Tiefe. Unsere Tiefe ist der Abgrund.” (Wolfgang Borchert, 1921-1947)

“to draw the final stroke”

In German the term “Schlussstrich” (“final stroke”) is now only used in the expression “einen Schlussstrich ziehen” (literally “to draw the final stroke”), which  means to really want to put an end to something (mentally). I don’t know how people would do that though. How do you just decide to stop thinking of, say, someone who has left you? So that’s maybe a reason why the intention to put an end to something or to forget something or someone needs an image like the “Schlussstrich”. In the end you have to keep on “deciding” or “stating” that things have ended many many times I suppose.

“I have a thousand brilliant lies
For the question:
How are you?

I have a thousand brilliant lies
For the question:
What is God?

If you think that the Truth can be known
From words,
If you think that the Sun and the Ocean
Can pass through that tiny opening
Called the mouth,
O someone should start laughing!
Someone should start wildly Laughing —
Now!”

Hafiz, “Someone Should Start Laughing”, translated by Daniel Ladinsky

ledig

There is this German word “ledig”, which must be some old fashioned word not used any more in everyday language. You can only find it in official forms (on IDs etc). There it just means “not married”.

But actually it means something like “free” or “without obstacle”. And I think it is a quite important term in Meister Eckhart’s mystic theology.
